XL426 Moves Inside and Hangar Appeal Launched

XL426 moved into Hangar 6 at London Southend Airport on Friday 26 May to begin a new life under cover after spending more than 30 years outdoors at the Essex airport.

Our volunteers, supported by the airport's staff, had spent almost a month getting the hangar ready for XL426's arrival. Work included: removing more than 50 tons of rubbish and unwanted items; extensive ceiling repairs; checking, repair and upgrading of the electrics, plumbing and drainage; floor repairs; installation of a disabled-friendly entrance door; and lots and lots of cleaning and painting!

London Southend Airport has been brilliant in helping out with much of the work, but we have dipped into our reserves to go beyond the basics and there is still much more for us to do to create better engineering and visitor facilities.

With this in mind we have launched the Vulcan Restoration Trust Hangar Appeal on Just Giving. Our aim is to raise £10,000 by the end of August. This will help us turn Hangar 6 into the quality engineering facility and visitor experience that XL426 deserves.

We very much hope you will support us by visiting our campaign page at www.justgiving.com/campaigns/charity/vulcanrestoration/hangarappeal.

And not forgetting that the public’s first chance to see XL426 in its new home will be on Fathers’ Day, Sunday June 18th, when we are holding our next Visit the Vulcan Day. Further Visit the Vulcan Days will take place on Sunday August 20th and Sunday September 24th.
